Quick Thoughts - 05.13.2018

G. ANDRIANO

First off, I would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Moms out there, mine included. Thank you for all of the wonderful things you do! It’s crazy to think of, but baseball really is a game of inches. Yesterday’s win could have easily gone the other way. The sac fly turned double play in the 9th inning was a game saving play (and challenge). If Olson slides right at the base, instead of trying to swing around Sanchez’s tag, or even if he slides head first - Sanchez likely misses the tag and Oakland likely wins 7-6. It’s a testament to how far this game has come. 20 years ago, the game would have continued - and commentators would have watched the replay 30 times begging for there to be replay review and claiming that they felt the tag was made. Then the game would have ended and nothing would have changed. It just blows my mind the process now. Watching that play unfold at full speed with the naked eye... would you have ever thought Sanchez tagged Olson? Even the replay, he just barely grazed his jersey. I’m not surprised the umpire called him safe. But that challenge and reversed call allowed the Yankees to even have a chance. How about Neil Walker? In his last 7 games he is hitting .300, getting on base at at .440 clip. It’s great to see him turning his season around. He’s had such a solid career, I think it’s safe to say that his slow start was a product of that stalled Free Agent market this past off-season - but that’s a whole different conversation. I was concerned for a while that he may not even finish the month with the team, he was playing so poorly. But with Tyler Austin going ice cold since he returned from his suspension, I would say Walker will see many more at bats and would likely become the back up first baseman if/when when Greg Bird comes back. I’m still not sure what will happen with Miguel Andújar when Brandon Drury comes back. Andújar has hit a solid .276 so far this season and has earned some consideration to stick around at third base. But with a more polished product like Drury coming back soon, it’s hard to believe Andújar would remain on the big league roster and get him get regular at bats. It's a fantastic problem for the Yankees to even have, though. A surplus of talent is ALWAYS a good thing. What do you think the Yankees will do when all these injured players come back? Who goes where? I’d love to hear what you all think! Also, with two starts under his belt now, would you give Domingo Germán another start? Notes: Sanchez (10), Hicks (3), and Judge (11) all homered for the Yankees.
